Simple Money and Energy Saving Tips for Washer and Dryer Use
Washers and dryers are built to clean your clothes - but they don't have to clean out your wallet. A few simple changes in the way you do laundry can lead to big financial and energy consumption savings. Follow these tips to cut down your bills without sacrificing your laundry needs.
- Run full loads. Clothes washers use the same amount of energy regardless of the size of the load - just take care not to overload.
- Wash in cold water. Heating water gobbles up about 90 percent of the energy it takes to operate a washer, so using the cold cycle reduces energy use and your energy bill. What's more, washing in cold water does a good job cleaning your clothes, especially when using cold-water detergent.
- Choose your washer's extended or high speed spin option to take out the greatest amount of moisture in your clothes after washing - this decreases the amount of time your clothes will need to be in the dryer.
- Limit the detergent. Using too much detergent will lead to more suds, making your washer work too hard or even leave residue on your clothes.
- Clean your dryer's lint filter after each use. Cleaning the lint filter improves air circulation and your dryer's efficiency - not to mention prevents fires.
- Remove dryer vent lint every month as a safety and energy-cutting measure.
- Run multiple loads over a single span of time. Run loads one after another, as the dryer is already warm after the first load, and will not rest and then have to reheat for a later load.
- Use the dryer's moisture sensor, which allows the dryer to shut off before the full cycle is over if it detects your clothes are already dry. The moisture sensor saves energy, as well as wear and tear on your clothes caused by overdrying.
Finally, choose high-efficiency washers and dryers, as these models are specifically designed to use less water per load and decrease your energy costs.
