Are Sub Zero Appliances Worth The Added Expense?
When appliance shoppers question whether or not sub zero appliances are worth the extra expense, the answer is usually yes. Studies have shown sub zero appliances, such as a sub zero refrigerator, run more efficiently and provide better food preservation than their standard counterparts.
Experiments with foods ranging from fresh produce to frozen goods provided results that surprised many and delighted others. In fact, one experiment involved leaving fresh fruit in the sub zero refrigerator for more than two weeks, and it remained as fresh as the day it was purchased retaining the same taste. Another experiment left a piece of cheese exposed on a dish for more than a month and at the conclusion of the trial, it had not developed mold or hardened from the exposure. The results of the studies found an average family can save upwards of $25 weekly in food spoilage due to the dual refrigeration system found in sub zero appliances.
Another major advantage of sub zero appliances is the longevity of the sub zero appliances. Typically, a refrigerator lasts approximately 10 years, but a sub zero refrigerator extends the lifespan to around 17 years. In certain climates, such as the Pacific Northwest where temperatures remain somewhat cooler than other areas of the country, it is not uncommon to find a sub zero refrigerator that is more than 20 years old since it does not have to work as hard to maintain the temperature.
One contributing factor the longevity of sub zero appliances is the inclusion of two compressors. A separate compressor cools the refrigerator while another works on the freezer portion of the sub zero refrigerator.
