The Best Refrigerator Style for Your Home
Refrigerators are much more than just a place to keep your food cold. These long-term appliance investments often serve as the lifeblood of your kitchen and a cornerstone of its décor. Modern refrigerators are known for their luxury features, such as wine and beverage racks, convertible glass shelves, and built-in self-diagnostic systems, as well as their many styles to choose from. A new refrigerator typically lasts at least 10 years, so when choosing your refrigerator style, know that you have your pick when finding your ideal unit to suit your Washington, DC, Virginia, or Maryland home.
All Refrigerator
Typically the most economical option, an all refrigerator does not have a freezer compartment, so you need a separate upright freezer in your home. An all refrigerator allows for a large amount of storage. Some all refrigerators come with an adjacent all freezer to be installed as a configuration.
Refrigerator with Freezer Capacity
A refrigerator with freezer capacity has a freezer compartment with one single door, instead of a split door with part opening to the refrigerator, and the other part to the freezer. Refrigerators with freezer capacity are often economical, but also less energy efficient, as every time the door is opened, the freezer - which is usually small in this type of refrigerator - loses cold air and needs extra energy to restore its temperature.
Bottom Mount Refrigerator
A bottom mount refrigerator consists of a freezer on the bottom and refrigerator on the top, each with a separate door. The bottom freezer can be a shelf with a door, or even a freezer drawer. Bottom mount refrigerators are popular for their practical positioning, as less bending is required when a freezer is at the bottom of the unit, and items used most often are at eye level in the refrigerator.
Top Mount Refrigerator
Typically less expensive than a bottom mount refrigerator, the top mount refrigerator is typically the most traditional style, consisting of a freezer on top and refrigerator on bottom, each with a separate door.
Side by Side Refrigerator
Requiring less space than the traditional full swing door found on top mount refrigerators, the side by side refrigerator features a freezer on the left side and a refrigerator on the right. Side by side refrigerators typically span at least 22 cubic square feet and often feature water and ice dispensers. The side by side refrigerator is heralded for its convenience and ease in viewing stored contents and compartments.
French Door Refrigerator
The professional chef-caliber French door style is typically the most expensive refrigerator option, but also the most luxurious. Consisting of split refrigerator doors, one of the left and one on the right, as well as a freezer on the bottom, French door refrigerators are ideal for storing large items and trays, and often feature water and ice dispensers. French door refrigerators offer the most storage for a set amount of space.
