Organize Your Refrigerator to Maximize Space and Minimize Spoiled Food (and Grocery Bills!)
We've all been there - either we go to the fridge and can't find anything we're looking for, or instead we find spoiled, old food that's far past its expiration date, equating to money thrown down the drain. Being able to find what you need is a major part of organization. However, organizing a refrigerator is especially important, as it decreases the risk of food decay, wasted money, bad odors, and any health problems from eating out-of-date food. An organized refrigerator isn't just an efficient time-saver, but also a money-saver!
Follow these steps to organize your refrigerator:
- Remove all items from the refrigerator.
- Throw out any items that are expired or items you know you will not consume before it spoils.
- Sort all remaining items into groups, such as meats, dairy, and produce.
- Wash the inside of the refrigerator with warm, soapy water.
- Place any item that does not have its container into a see-through container. For optimal organization, label the container with an expiration date.
- Re-stock the refrigerator with similar items in groups, which helps avoid losing items.
- Place tall items in the back of the refrigerator so you can see what you have stored.
- Consider purchasing beverage racks to keep cans and bottles properly stacked.
- Place your most perishable items, such as meat, on the bottom shelf, as it is cooler than the top shelf. Place condiments and glass bottles on the door.
- Leave enough room between items so that you can easily reach each item.
- Maintain an organized, clean refrigerator by cleaning it out regularly. Before you go to the grocery store, look in your fridge and see what is needed, ensuring you have enough room for new groceries and that the fridge stays organized. Keep the size and space left in your refrigerator in mind while grocery shopping.
