Organize Your Washington DC Kitchen Pantry to Save Time and Money
Organizing your kitchen pantry will not only clean out this often-used space, but also cut down on cooking and preparation time. An organized pantry will also help you save money by not buying items that are in your pantry, but hidden from view, as well as cutting down on the amount of expired food thrown away - ultimately helping you shop your pantry instead of constantly running to the grocery store.
Follow these tips when organizing your pantry:
- Routinely clean out your pantry by going through all the items and throwing out any items past their expiration date.
- Consider donating an abundance of unopened items to a local food bank.
- Organize shelves according to type of food by grouping similar items together. Keep all perishables, such as potatoes, together and in plain view.
- Store baking and cooking items separately in baskets to easily transfer them back and forth to the counter.
- Add expandable shelves, turntables, or other baskets to maximize your pantry space.
- Rotate your stock by placing a new can or container behind an older can of that same item, so you use the oldest item first.
- Store bulk items, such as rice and pasta in clear airtight jars and containers. Label these containers with the date and item stored.
- Install a pantry door spice rack to keep your spices in sight.
- Keep a running list of items needed when you visit the grocery store.
