Features to Look for When Choosing a Kitchen Faucet

The kitchen is a family gathering place, food preparation area, major source of home value, and focal point all in one. So when choosing a kitchen faucet, treat it as one of the most important and often-used components of the kitchen. A number of faucets that can complement any kind of décor ranging from traditional to modern are available on the market today.

Faucets come in four types, including compression valve, ball valve, ceramic disk, and cartridge. Compression valve faucets use rubber washers, so they run the risk of leaking, but are typically easy to repair. Ball valve faucets control water flow and temperature via a steel ball that can be easily replaced. Ceramic disk faucets offer the highest quality, as the disk hardly wears out; however, if it does, it is expensive to fix. Lastly, cartridge faucets usually do not require any maintenance.

Choose a faucet made of quality materials that can stand up to time and activity. Look for a faucet made of stainless steel, copper, solid brass, or zinc, rather than faucets constructed of plastic parts. Opt for a faucet with a physical vapor deposition (PVD) finish, which is made by vaporizing the metal and glazing it with a scratch-resistant, non-tarnishing finish.

Some faucets offer a stream and spray feature, which allows the user to select the type of water flow, perfect for any job from washing vegetables to scrubbing pots and pans. The water pause feature is comprised of a button in the faucet head that can be pushed to temporarily stop water flow. A pull-out or pull-down spray faucet allows easy maneuver of water flow; if you have the space, choose a faucet with a long hose to reach beyond your sink. Some faucets feature touch-sensitive controls to easily start and stop water flow by touching anywhere on the handle. Faucets can also feature built-in water filters.
