How to Streamline Your Kitchen Storage System
It's no secret that your Washington DC area kitchen can get cluttered. A fast-paced home life can often center on the kitchen, as your kitchen can serve as a place for cooking, eating, gathering, and working - or the hub of the home. A well-organized kitchen can cut down on the chaos and simplify your home life one cupboard or pantry at a time.
When organizing your Washington DC kitchen, try the following tips:
- Think about your routines and what you spend the most time doing in your kitchen when designing your storage system.
- Recognize that organization is always a work in progress.
- Organize your pantry so you can easily find items as well as be aware when you run low on a particular item.
- Divide pantry and cupboard space according to each type of food, such as snacks, condiments, pastas, and canned vegetables. Try replicating a grocery store layout.
- Place the newest food items at the back of the cupboard and push older food items forward.
- Install rectangular steps in your cupboards so items can be stored at different heights and items remain visible.
- Place larger and heavier items in lower cabinets and keep items used regularly, such as utensils and dishes, close at hand.
- Use a desktop file folder to vertically store plastic cutting boards and metal baking sheets.
- Keep small baskets for storing small packets of spices or seasonings, so you can pull out the entire basket when looking for something.
