Cut Your Home Energy and Water Costs by Choosing an ENERGY STAR Clothes Washer
You've probably heard of ENERGY STAR appliances, but have you heard of the many benefits ENERGY STAR washers offer? Washing machines with ENERGY STAR labels use 18 to 25 gallons of water per load, compared to the 40 gallons used by a standard washer, and as much as 50 percent less energy per load as compared to a standard washer. When you consider that the average American family washes an estimated 400 loads of laundry each year, the less your home energy and water costs, the better.
The ENERGY STAR label means a machine has met strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy. ENERGY STAR qualified washers use advanced technology to dramatically reduce water use and come in either front-load or redesigned top-load designs. Most qualified washers do not have a central agitator, which allows for more usable space in the washer, and sophisticated wash systems to gently flip and spin clothes through a reduced stream of water, instead of twisting and pulling clothes around a turning agitator. ENERGY STAR washers also feature high spin speeds, meaning more water is extracted during the spin cycle, leading to less moisture in clothes and therefore less time and energy in the dryer.
When looking for an ENERGY STAR washer, choose a model with a high modified energy factor (MEF) and low water factor (WF). MEF is a measure of energy efficiency that considers energy used by the washer and energy used to heat the water; the higher the MEF, the more energy efficient the washer. WF measures water efficiency in gallons of water consumed per cubic foot of capacity; the lower the WF, the more water efficient the washer. Both MEF and WF figures are listed on the ENERGY STAR label. Some ENERGY STAR washers even feature water level options that allow you to adjust the water level to match the size of the load.
Choosing an ENERGY STAR-certified washing machine can result in considerable energy and water savings in the long run. To determine how much a washing machine will cost to operate, consult the yellow and black EnergyGuide label hanging inside or on the outside of a new washer. With the considerable cost savings you'll realize over the life of your ENERGY STAR washer, you'll be able to invest in a high efficiency dryer.
