Simple Ways to Keep your Dishwasher's Track Record Clean

Dishwashers are meant to streamline and simplify your cleaning process. As a low-maintenance appliance, dishwashers typically do not require strenuous upkeep when used regularly, but do require routine checks to make sure the keep your dishes sparkling.

Follow these easy steps to keep your Washington, DC home's dishwasher running efficiently and properly.

    • If your dishwasher goes unused for a week or so, you may notice a bad odor or mold coming from the appliance. Remedy odors and molds caused by lack of use by running a cup of white vinegar or dishwasher detergent through an entire cycle in your empty dishwasher.
    • Remove any rust on the inside of your dishwasher by scrubbing damaged areas with fine steel wool.
    • Repair cut or chipped plastic coating on dish racks by employing a plastic coating material or marine-grade sealant on any metal-exposed area. Make sure you clean and sand the area before applying any coating. Any chips or cuts left on your dish racks may lead to rusting.
    • Avoid overloading your dishwasher to ensure all your dishes are cleaned and dried properly.
    • Clean the filter located near the bottom of the dishwasher regularly. Consult your dishwasher's manual for filter removal instructions. If you find holes in your filter, replace it to protect the pump from any particles and food residue.
    • Always use detergents specifically meant for dishwashers and avoid using hand-washing dish detergent in your dishwasher, as this will create large bubbles that leak from the appliance. However, if inappropriate detergent is used, foamy bubble residue can be removed by spraying the area with dishwasher salt and running the dishwasher on a drain cycle to remove the soap and water.
