Choosing Appliances For Green Living
Making a commitment to living green requires more than simply purchasing certain light bulbs or driving a specific car, you can also show your dedication to eco-friendly living through purchasing green kitchen appliances. Many kitchen appliances such as ranges are available in eco-friendly versions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save money and reduce the carbon footprint.
The energy star rating is a good place to start when searching for green kitchen appliances. The Energy Star rating is a government certification program that determines the energy efficiency rating and has become the industry standard. Choosing ranges with an Energy Star rating is a good choice when purchasing a new range, but it really doesn't narrow your choices in kitchen appliances because most kitchen appliances now feature the Energy Star rating.
Choosing electric or gas when purchasing ranges is the next big question to consider when purchasing green kitchen appliances. Gas is a fossil fuel and a limited resource, but most electricity is created by burning coal-burning power plants. So basically, neither of those options will help you choose green kitchen appliances.
Electric ranges provide a variety of options so you should choose the stove with the most efficient heating elements possible. Ranges that offer induction heating and cooking are the most energy efficient options in ranges, followed closely by halogen elements and then followed by electric coil elements.
Some gas ranges offer electronic ignition and use approximately 40 percent less gas than ranges with a pilot light. The longer you use your new range the longer it will stay out of the landfill. Even further reducing your carbon footprint.
